At J.S. Abrams Elementary School, literacy is promoted by integrating information and digital literacy skills into the curriculum. Our students are instructed on how to safely and effectively navigate the internet and learn new software that is appropriate and reliable. Students learn many essential computer and technology skills from opening documents to finding research materials to supplement their projects. There is ongoing collaboration with our teachers and our media specialist to create engaging learning experiences. Our students have access to diverse collections and resources that fosters critical thinking and cultivates a love of reading.

Mrs. Lyons is not only a teacher in the Bessemer City School System, she is also a product of Bessemer. She has earned a Bachelor's and Master's degree in Elementary/Early Childhood Education from Jacksonville State University. She has also earned a Master's Degree from the University of West Alabama in Library Media. She began teaching in the Bessemer City School System in 1995. She is a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. She is also a valuable resource for teachers, by helping them to stay on top of relevant technology, navigate and source technology tools, implement digital learning techniques. She also partners with the local public librarian. to share ideas and host collaborative events that enhance our community.

Mission

J.S. Abrams Library Media Center Mission is to equip our students with lifelong literacy skills, enabling them to become effective, efficient, and ethical users and creators of information.

Vision

The vision for creating an effective school library & library media center is to have a space that has a variety of resources for all learners equally; a space that has flexible furniture, areas for different learning zones, such as collection, technology, and makerspace.
